Community and Common Good
My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. Galatians 6:1-3

In keeping with the social nature of man, the good of each individual is necessarily related to the common good, which in turn can be defined only in reference to the human person: Do not live entirely isolated, having retreated into yourselves, as if you were already justified, but gather instead to seek the common good together. I belong to a community. I am a social being. My interests should benenfit all rather than simply me. I need to always ensure that my actions and my words only bring good and healing rather than harm or nothing at all. My goal should be that everyone has what they need to live a dignified life. I should participate in life in such a way that demonstrates that I know I am not alone - and not the most important.

No one should be "o.k" with a child living like this. The common good is not served when we ignore poverty - no matter how far away. (Port-au-Prince, Haiti 11/11)

The Community and the common good are served when I understand my mission as a Catholic teacher. I need to represent the teachings of the Catholic Church in every aspect of my vocation. Even when it is difficult to do so.

Thomas Groome suggests that our expression of our Christian journey can be divided into engagement of the Hands, Heart and Head. In light of this teaching, these lessons address the issues of the Hands by reinforcing the idea that Intimacy and Sexuality are gifts given by God, to man and woman, as a way of living in loving relationship together, in praise of God and in anticipation of creating life together. Therefore, the need to live a chaste life until marriage is explained. These lessons reinforce a journey of the Heart as the discussions insist on keeping the themes of Love and Justice and Community and the Common Good as integral to the fair and loving treatment of all brothers and sisters in Christ – no matter how they differ from our own experience (ie: cultural, sexual orientation, physical, etc.) and the Head is engaged as students are led to discuss the issues of the right to Dignity of the Human Person – a zero tolerance of harassment of any kind is expected and instructed through these lessons.
